Azhwar Thirunagari Temple on the banks of River Thamirabarani |
River Thamirabarani (தாமிரபரணி) is known for its historical and spiritual significance, being the birth place of Tamil language, among many other significant aspects. One interesting association that Tamirabarani River has had, in its long and illustrious history of spiritual significance, is its association with the saint Sri Ramanuja, the founder of Sri Vaishnava philosophy.
Long before the Avatar of Sri Ramanuja, Nammazhwar (நம்மாழ்வார்) who was hailed as the leader of the Vaishnava fold by Sri Aalavanthar, was born in Azhwar Thirunagari (Alwar Thirunagari - ஆழ்வார் திருநகரி), which is located 25 Kms South-East of Tirunelveli, along the banks of River Thamirabarani. The town of Azhwar Thirunagari, known erstwhile as Thirukkurugur (திருக்குருகூர்) derived its current name since Nammazhwar was born there.

As Nammazhwar was ready to ascend to Paramapadam (attain Mukthi or Liberation), His devotee, Madhura Kavi Azhwar (மதுரகவி ஆழ்வார்) sought Nammazhwar's blessings. Nammazhwar directed Madhurakavi Azhwar to boil the water from Tamirabarani river. As Madhurakavi Aazhwar followed His instructions, he obtained Anjali Hastham (hands held together in worshipping posture) from Tamirabarani waters.
When questioned by Madhura Kavi Azhwar about the significance of Anjali Hastham, Nammazhwar professed that it denoted the Bhavishyadacharyan (the Acharya of the future). The future Acharya referred to by Nammazhwar was Sri Ramanuja, born in 1017 CE in Sriperumpudur (ஸ்ரீபெரும்புதூர்), in Tamil Nadu.

This incident reflects not just the greatness of Nammazhwar, who could foresee the birth of one of the most prominent Acharyas of India, but also the spiritual significance of River Tamirabarani and that of the holy town of Azhwar Thirunagari.
